Twenty-two years ago, Doom changed the world of video games forever. The first-person shooter became a cultural phenomenon and gave birth the the genre that’s still going strong today. After years of work, id Software revealed the new Doom at E3 2015 via an amazing trailer.
From the gameplay shown at Bethesda’s press conference, it’s definitely doom. Fast, gory, and intense. There are some new additions to how it plays such as jet boosts like what we saw in Titanfall and Call of Duty recently, and there are awesome (and very gory) melee finishers. But that doesn’t change what looks to be a visceral Doom experience. The shotgun in particular looks just as you’d hope.
The game will have a full campaign, as well as arena-based multiplayer and a new editor called Doom SnapMap that makes building levels easy enough for anyone to do it. A return to arena-based multiplayer will be welcome for longtime fans of the genre that may have grown a little burned out over the “Call of Duty” style online play in the FPS genre.
Doom will be out in Spring 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Here’s the official trailer that you can watch in 60fps:
